Spooktastic Howloween Dog Collar

Sammy is so darn cute in his Halloween collar I JUST CAN'T STAND IT!!!

Here's what YOU will need to make Sammy's Halloween collar:

  • Elastic - 2 inches wide (or close to it)

Loosely measure the elastic around your dogs neck then add 2 inches.  This is because you will be gathering the material over the elastic and that will make it fit tighter on your dog's neck.

  • Halloween Material - 1/8th yard of Halloween material for the collar that is brightly colored like black with orange pumpkins, or purple and orange.  YOU decide what color.

The length of the material should be double the length of the elastic. So if you measured your dog's neck and it's 10 inches, add 2 inches, and cut the elastic piece 12 inches long. The Halloween material would be double that or 24 inches long. You can always cut the Halloween material longer if you have enough material.  If you make it 2 1/2 or 3 times the elastic, your dog collar will be really nice and full.

The width of the material should be 2 times the width of the elastic and add 1 inch. So if the elastic is 2 inch wide, then cut the Halloween material so it is 5 inches wide and 24 inches long.

  • Colorful ribbon - the wider the better. I chose bright orange with black dots and it's 2 1/2 inches wide.

    The
length of the ribbon should be at least double the length of the elastic, but cut it the length that you cut the Halloween material above.

  • Colored netting - purple, orange, or black. BUT you can use any color YOU want!

Cut the netting the same length as the ribbon and Halloween material above (about 1/4 yard).

  • Strips of colored material in Halloween colors or prints like orange, purple, black, green - YOU decide the color and how many pieces you want.

The width of the material should range from 8 - 12 inches (1/4 yard of each). And you want to fold the material you choose in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together.  So if you want a piece of material that is 4-inches wide, then you would fold a piece of material 8-inches over lengthwise.

The length of the material pieces should be the same length as the Halloween material, ribbon, and netting.

Here's How YOU Can Do it:

1.  Lay the piece of Halloween material (that is the collar) on a table so the right side is facing up.

2.  Then  you want to layer all your pieces of material, ribbon and netting in a pile on top of the Halloween material.  The right side of all the pieces should be facing the right side of the Halloween material in 1.

Layer the material and pieces of ribbon and netting with the smallest width closest to the Halloween collar and end with the largest width item on top.

If you look at the materials below, the purple netting is the widest, then the ribbon with the black dots, then the purple material , and then the bright orange with yellow material.  The dark orange is the collar piece that the elastic will go through.  It is the last piece of material in the picture below.

When you layer these materials, you would put the smallest width (the orange with yellow first - directly on top of the darker orange, then the purple material, then the ribbon with black dotes and end with the purple netting on top.

GOT IT???

4. Sew all the layers together 1/2- inch from the edge of the material.

5.  Now we are going to follow the same directions as the Ghostacular collar.  So in the picture, instead of the dark orange, we'll use the black Halloween material so you can see it better.

6. Turn the unsewn edge of the Halloween material under  1/2-inch and iron.

Then pin that over the seam and pin along the edge and sew close to the edge. It's helpful if you press the seam with all the material towards the inside of the Halloween collar material like in the picture below.

In the picture below you can see the sewn lower edge that has been sewn close to the edge (Sorry, I sewed it in black so it's hard to see!!!).

7. Now we want to place the elastic inside the seam that we  just sewed together.

Put a safety pin on the end of the elastic and push it through the seam.  Remember that the piece of elastic is half the length of the material, so as you pull it through, the Halloween material will gather.

When the elastic reaches the end, sew it by machine so it doesn't pull back through the collar.

Put the two ends of the collar, right sides together and sew a 1/2-inch seam.

Here's another picture of a side seam that I sewed on another collar.

And these are the Spooktastic collars - all with different materials and ribbon, but they are all made the same.

Just remember that they are all made the same by layering pieces right sides facing the main collar with the smallest first (closest to the collar) and ending with the widest on top.  The pieces can be ribbon, material of all colors, and netting.

And REMEMBER - it doesn't have to be PERFECT!

BTW - I have the cutest ever pictures of Daisy in my first Diary.  She's in her Blingy Collar that has daisies on it!!!  OMG!!!!
